9/4/2023 0 Comments Mugen warped reality![]() It takes its name from alternate reality games ( ARGs), such as I Love Bees or The Dark Knight, that spill out from the internet into the physical world, providing an alternate view of what players encounter. This creates an alternate view of the real world, using reality as a digital playground via a superimposed, virtual narrative freed from the linear progression of actual time. Go further and shift also from time to no-time and you now embrace alternate reality. Think of a GPS navigation system that overlays the physical scene outside your windshield with a digital representation of it on your car dashboard. ![]() If you start from reality and add in a dose of digital substances - such as checking your iPhone for player stats while watching the baseball game - then you are in the realm of augmented reality, which uses bits to augment our real-world experience, overlaying it with digital information constructed to enhance, extend, edit, or amend the way we experience the real world. ![]() You may very well enjoy playing Major League Baseball 2K11 on your PlayStation 3 against your best buddy, but it can never compare with cheering on your hometown team from the bleachers. While these dimensions do not bind you to a particular time, place, or substance, this is not a plea to abandon reality, for it will forevermore provide the richest of experiences. The most obvious opportunities involve shifting from the reality of time, space, and matter to the virtuality of no-time, no-space, and no-matter, including playing computer games, exploring virtual worlds, probing real-world simulations, connecting via social media, or even just surfing the World Wide Web. Specifically, companies can innovate new offerings by shifting from matter to no-matter by constructing offerings from digital substances rather than material substances from space to no-space by forming offerings in virtual places rather than just in the real places of the physical world and from time to no-time by leaving the normal sequence of actual events to enact autonomous events outside of real time. In our last post, “Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier,” we showed how digital technology extends the three fundamental dimensions of the universe: time, space, and matter.
